The preferred attack was called an “anvil” attack that called for Avengers to simultaneously approach the target from either side of the bow, making it all but impossible for the target to maneuver without exposing itself to attack. For Avenger pilots, getting the right launch profile took good airmanship and constant practice. The pilot had to judge his speed, altitude and glide angle and then launch the weapon the correct distance from the target. The glide angle was key – the torpedo needed to be released in a shallow dive for maximum reliability. If the angle was too steep, the torpedo could be damaged upon water entry, and if the angle was too slow, the weapon’s controls might not work properly. If these were all correct and the Avenger came in at 260 knots and 800ft, this meant that the torpedo would fall for seven seconds at an angle of 28 degrees while covering 3,000ft between the time the weapon was dropped and when it entered the water.
